Fennel Cafe Festive Afternoon Tea Review

Merry Christmas everybody!

To celebrate the season of giving, I decided to gift my boyfriend and his parents a nice Christmas high tea at Fennel Cafe. Fennel is located at Gardens By The Bay's Flower Dome, and the high tea runs from 3pm-5pm at S$45/person.

I made a reservation via the Fennel website and had to put down a whopping S$200 deposit (S$50/person) to confirm my reservation. Do note that while the deposit offsets the bill charges, you still have to pay for GST/service charge on the day itself.

Guests at Fennel can enjoy a free buggy ride from Bayfront Plaza to the cafe as well as free entry to the Flower Dome. I was most excited about the second perk because there's the Poinsetta Wishes Flower Display going on now and I really wanted to bring my boyfriend there.

It was quite a struggle trying to locate the place; it was also raining so we didn't get to go on the buggy ride. To get there, simply head to the Flower Dome and then turn left to walk around it. You'll see MBS so just follow that general direction around the dome and you'll eventually see a sign that says 'Fennel Cafe'.

Upon entering Fennel, we could immediately smell the whiff of pollen. The cafe is also chilly since it's in the Flower Dome, so you can dress up in coats and jackets or whatever. We also requested specifically to be seated somewhere near the windows so the view would be nicer too.

The ambience at Fennel was great and I loved how there were plants and flowers everywhere. The lighting was also superb even though it rained.

Fennel's afternoon tea has two menus - the regular Festive Afternoon Tea and the Festive Vegetarian Afternoon Tea. They're both priced at S$45, and the only differences between the two are that the turkey sandwich, smoked salmon, and chicken liver from the regular menu is switched out for the curry egg sandwich, cucumber and cream cheese sandwich as well as the soft baked beetroot tart in the vegetarian menu.

You also get free flow coffee or tea, which is pretty sweet! The coffee was amazing too - really thick, strong, creamy, and sweet just the way I like it.

I absolutely loved the food. My favourite of the savouries was the Chicken liver parfait cherry. I know it sounds weird (and looks weird too because it looks like a cherry!) but the taste was great. It was a little bit sweet too, but overall still a savoury dish due to the strong flavour of the liver. Of all the sweets, I loved loved loved the Pumpkin pie with cream cheese frosting and the Quince and chestnut. I really appreciate that even though these are labelled 'sweets', the sweetness wasn't overpowering and still had a savoury taste to it.

I'm not really a scone person, but I liked the handmade scones at Fennel. The clotted cream and berry jam was definitely the highlight because it brought a whole new dimension to the taste of the scones. Otherwise, the scones would just be okay - not amazing, just meh.

Later we took a trip to the Flower Dome and had a great time looking at the gorgeous decorations. It was really festive and the lights were very pretty. Was crazily crowded though, so if you do make a visit get ready for lots of queuing!

I loved my afternoon tea experience at Fennel and am looking forward to visiting again. The food is great, value for money, and the portions are generous. They do change their high tea menu every now and then, so you can stay tuned on their website to try out their different afternoon tea sets!
