Hey, Faithfuls! If you’re ever craving authentic Malaysian food in Singapore, especially late at night, JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop is the perfect spot to visit. Open until 2am, it’s ideal for a late-night supper with friends or family. As a Malaysian living in Singapore, I always find myself coming here whenever I’m missing the flavours of home. The fact that it’s tucked away in Clarke Quay makes it a great hidden gem for those looking to satisfy their cravings after a night out.
The restaurant has a unique blend of styles. On one side, you get nostalgic old-school vibes with wooden furniture, retro Chinese signages, and vintage decor like old telephones and tiled floors. The other side, though, is much more modern, with stunning wall murals and a large dragon hanging from the ceiling.
When the staff recommended their Kaya Butter Toast ($2.50), I had to give it a try. Thick slabs of butter are paired with their house-made kaya spread, which is rich and custardy. It was a satisfying way to kick off the meal.
If you love kaya like I do, you can buy it by the jar in two flavours: Regular and Pandan.
Next up, I tried the Chicken Curry Chee Cheong Fun ($7.90), which features thick, flat rice noodles, steamed chicken slices, fried tau pok, pig skin, and long beans. The curry is lemak—rich and creamy without being too spicy. It’s the kind of dish that’s incredibly moreish and perfect if you want something comforting.
Another must-try is the Nasi Lemak with Crispy Fried Chicken Whole Leg ($12.90). The coconut rice was decently fragrant, and it paired beautifully with the sambal and the side of curry vegetables. The star of the dish was definitely the crispy fried chicken leg, which was juicy on the inside and came topped with crunchy, deep-fried bits that added texture. It’s a really filling meal, and perfect for when I want something hearty.
My personal favourite, though, was the Penang Char Kuey Teow ($10.90). This dish delivered everything I hoped for—thin, flat noodles stir-fried with prawns, Chinese sausage, and beansprouts, all tossed in a savoury, smoky sauce. The wok hei was intense and brought out the dish’s rich flavours. Every bite was packed with umami goodness.
One of my friends tried the Penang Prawn Mee ($11.90), which is another solid choice. The broth was rich and full-bodied, with a deep prawn flavour that tasted like it had been simmering for hours. The noodles were springy, and the dish came with generous portions of prawns, pork slices, and boiled eggs.
JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop also has some great side dishes. The Prawn Paste Chicken Mid-Joint ($8.90) was a crowd favourite. The chicken was incredibly crispy on the outside, with tender, juicy insides.
On the other hand, the Golden Prawn Cakes ($6.50) was a bit of a letdown. The filling was fine, but the skin wasn’t crispy enough for my liking. It lacked that satisfying crunch you want from fried items, and overall, it felt pretty average.
Even after all that food, we couldn’t resist trying the desserts. We went for the Ice Chendol ($4.50), which was towering and refreshing, with shaved ice, gula melaka, red beans, and chewy green cendol noodles. The combination of sweet and salty was perfect for cooling down after a hearty meal.
We also had the Black Sesame Paste ($4), which was smooth and thick, with just the right amount of bitterness to balance the sweetness. It was a comforting, satisfying end to the meal.
To wash it all down, I highly recommend trying their Hor Ka Sai ($4.50), a unique blend of Milo and kopi. The drink was perfectly balanced, with a slight bitterness from the coffee and a chocolatey sweetness from the Milo, making it a great pick if you want something different.
While JUwei Old Nanyang Coffee Shop is slightly pricier given its prime location in Clarke Quay, the food and atmosphere more than make up for it. If you’re in the area and craving local Malaysian food, this is definitely a spot worth checking out for a cosy, late-night meal with friends or family.
