Tempura Oji @ Kreta Ayer Rd: Hidden Gem Food Review
Upon entering we were greeted by the staff who warmly welcomed us in. So looking in from the outside you actually don't notice anything unique about this place - it just looks like a regular restaurant that looks very empty.

It's only when you look to the left corner of this restaurant that you realize the fridges!

When we opened the door, smoke immediately filled up the place for a very dramatic entrance. We first saw this bar filled with hundreds of alcohol bottles, and then noticed the very spacious dining area further inside.

There were even lounge couches and a disco ball on the ceiling! The place was very dimly lit and we saw a few groups enjoying cocktails.
We ordered a Tempura Moriawase (S$25) to share, as well as a Shoyu Tonkotsu (S$19) and Gyuniku Don (S$19).
The Tempura Moriawase had deep-fried king tiger prawn and mixed vegetable tempura with tempura sauce, pureed radish, and chopped ginger. I'm not a big fan of tempura but I have to say this was pretty good! The tempura was very crispy and crunchy and did not have any of that gross floury taste. It also went incredibly well with the sour sauce.

The Shoyu Tonkotsu was made of homemade skinny noodles, a medium-rich broth, and topped with thin slices of char shu, blanched spinach, diced portobello mushroom, spring onion, and shredded red pepper. The ramen was very good and I liked the smokey char shu as well as the supple portobello mushrooms. The broth wasn't too oily and had a strong taste.

The Gyuniku Don was a little spicey and extremely flavourful, though the portion wasn't the biggest. My boyfriend said the taste was a 10/10, and the homemade sauce had a bit of sweetness to it.

We also ordered some alcoholic drinks, including the Whiskey Highball (S$20) and Savor (S$22), which was this umeshu liqueur with gin, nori syrup, miso, and fresh lime juice. I know this sounds a little weird, but it tasted quite good! The miso and nori syrup added a little savory taste to the cocktail and some creaminess as well but did not overwhelm the umeshu.

Tempura Oji is quite an interesting place to visit and although the food is good, the prices are still quite high since the portion isn't the biggest. The alcoholic drinks are also rather expensive, but I did love the ambience and the service. Tempura Oji may pop into my mind the next time I'm thinking of having some drinks with my girlfriends, but I don't see myself becoming a frequent customer.
With that said, I still think everyone should come visit this place once!
Thanks for reading, and see you next post.
