Hvala @ CHIJMES: Japanese Cafe & Teahouse Food Review
Hey friends! There have been lots of Japan-inspired cafes and restaurants popping up recently, and because I'm not able to travel, I find myself very much drawn to them. I was taking a casual stroll at CHIJMES recently and came across Hvala, this Japanese cafe and teahouse. Hvala's concept is very cool because one part of the cafe has a tatami concept, so it feels as if you've been transported to Japan!
The staff ushered us to our seats and told us to take off our shoes before getting onto the mat, and also told us to be careful because a cleaning charge will be enforced if we spilt anything.

I got myself the Kinako Warabi Mochi (S$4.80) with Japanese black sugar, and it was the perfect dessert for mochi lovers. The mochi was soft, chewy, and not dense, and did not taste artificial like those frozen ones you get at NTUC. The black sugar made everything sweeter but it wasn't too sweet until it was overbearing. Overall it was a very light dessert that was easy to eat.

If you're getting the Matcha Petit Gâteau, do not - and I repeat, DO NOT get a matcha drink. This is because the dessert is very strong and can be a bit much after a few bites. To cleanse your palate, you may want to get something like the Orchid's Breath (S$6.80). Specially blended for Hvala from a variety of rock tea, the Orchid’s Breath has a mesmerising fragrance of wild orchid and honey notes. It was also very gentle and refreshing, with a smooth long finish.

So anyway, my boyfriend made the mistake of ordering a very strong matcha dessert with this Matcha Ice Blend (S$7) with milk - which don't get me wrong, was super good, but was too much matcha in one sitting. The Matcha Ice Blend consisted of premium matcha blended with ice and was sweetened. But of course, if you absolutely love matcha and can't get enough of it, be my guest and order as matcha as you like! ;)

I can see why Hvala is so popular as the desserts and drinks are of really good quality. It can also be a bit filling, and the prices are pretty decent - not the most affordable, but not the most expensive too. Hvala would be a good place to come if you're a big fan of Japan and Japanese desserts, and want to get an experience as close as the one you'd get if you actually go to the land of the rising sun!
