absurdities-review

Hey friends! Really excited to be reviewing today's post which is on Absurdities! Absurdities is a very interesting concept because it's not just any ordinary Omakase, it's a multi-sensorial Omakase where you climb and crawl through different rooms to get to your food! Absurdities is located in Asylum Coffeehouse and offer six unique and out-of-these world dishes. This entire experience will set you back at approximately S$368/couple.

My boyfriend and I booked a slot at 9pm, and when we arrived, we saw a short queue outside Asylum Coffeehouse. Everyone was seated nicely according to their groups of twos. One of the staff saw us and came over to ask for our names before briefing us about the general rules. She also gave us a numbered sticker each which we had to paste on ourselves.

In about ten minutes, it was finally time to enter! We stepped into Asylum Coffeehouse and everything look pretty normal. After all, it was just a regular cafe that actually operates during the day.

We were served our first dish, an appetizer called Garden In A Bowl. This vegetarian starter had roasted vegetables, fresh berries, buckwheat, nasturtium, and sorrel. It was paired with the Garden Sun Wine which was a combination of orange peels, raisins, and get this - Sarsi!

Once we were done with our meal, we took some time to browse the drinks menu. We decided to share the alcoholic drinks pairing which cost S$88, and this meant that we would get an alcoholic drink for every course!

Once we made the payment, we were ready to enter the next room. Just behind the coffee counter were six different doors, and only one would open to reveal a secret hallway to the next room! Spoiler alert - it's the last door. This door opened to reveal this trippy mirror hallway decked in colourful LED lights.

After snapping some shots for the gram, we made a left turn and found ourselves in another world - the one with the Tree Of Old.

Even though I've seen this room so many times on Instagram, it still blew my mind when I saw it in person. From the dim lighting to the hanging strings and wood shavings undeath my feet, it definitely made me feel like I was inside of an actual tree.

Our second course was called Burger And Ash, and it consisted of two brioche buns stuffed with shredded oyster mushroom, charcoal tapioca, olive ash, and jackfruit! This was one of the most interesting burgers I ever had. However, the highlight of the second course was the charcoal tapioca fries which was crispy with a smoky aroma.

The paired drink was the Cola Not Cola, so don't be fooled by the very convincing-looking Coca Cola can. This concoction had a mix of triple citrus zest, coconut palm sugar, coriander seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, and vodka, and it gave me a sweet taste that spread all the way to the back of my throat. By now, I was starting to feel a little bit tipsy and could feel my face warming up.

The next room was hidden behind a concealed door, and I found myself stepping into a tent in the middle of an imaginative sandy desert. Our third course was the Smoke Quail Tajine where we were served a quail on top of smoked tabbouleh salad and falafel. The quail was extremely juicy, and when dipped with the pomegranate ketchup, absolutely spectacular. For drinks, we enjoyed the Tamarind Be Upon You which had tamarind, fresh pineapple juice, memento, agave syrup, coriander, and salt.

By the third course, my tummy was already almost full! But we still had the next room to go to. After climbing up a ladder and through a little hole in the wall, I found myself in the fourth room! The fourth room transported us into the 1950s - or specifically a kitchen from the 1950s with bright pastels, electrical appliances, and faux brick walls. We were served our drink first, called Death In The Afternoon. This drink was one of the strong ones as it was a combination of pinot grigio and vodka, and you could also taste hints of lychee and pear.

Our fourth course was very quirky because it came served as a bowl of cereal, but it was actually Mama's Famous Cereal Chicken Pot Pie! We poured the 'milk' which was actually cauliflower puree into the bowl, mixed it all up, and into the tummy in went.

My stomach was almost bursting by now, but I was still super curious to see what was next. The door to the fifth room was located under a table, and we had to frog walk to enter it! Now we were inside a room that looked like a set straight out of a Harry Potter movie. We were greeted by our friendly sorcerer who served us the Mortar Purple Squid Risotto with purple carrots, celeriac, uni, and parmesan crumble. It also had these isomalt lime glass toppings that resembled glass shards, and you had to break them into smaller pieces before mixing them into the dish. How creative!

We also enjoyed one of my favourite drinks of the nice was the Umami Bomb which had an interesting mix of black garlic, concord grapes, tamari, and cold-pressed beet.

The final course was served in the first-class cabin of a plane, and boy did I feel the wanderlust! Our very chirpy flight attendant accompanied us safely through take-off and served us our dessert, the First Class Gold Leaf Jelly Telephone. The lychee jelly was shaped like an old school telephone and sprinkled with 24-carat gold leaf, French elderflowers, verjus rouge, and Bombay Sapphire. The dessert was paired with Bubbles - a sparkling and refreshing prosecco.

I don't think I've ever had a dining experience as interesting as the one at Absurdities. Everything was amazing from the decor to the food and the service. Everything was thought out so carefully and creatively to ensure that diners were in for a surprise in every room. I really appreciate the little details and hard work put into making this an absolutely out-of-this-world experience. This was the best S$368 I've ever spent!

I can't see any reason why I wouldn't recommend Absuridites, and you should definitely try this at least once in your life.

That's all for today's review, thank you for reading and see you next post!
