Hey, Faithfuls! Lately, I’ve been taking a night course near Everton, giving me the perfect excuse to explore cafes in the area. One that I’ve been meaning to visit for a while is Cafe Wabi Sabi. I’ve tried their Joo Chiat outlet before, but I was keen to check out their Outram Park location.

A short five-minute walk from Outram Park MRT Station, Cafe Wabi Sabi faces the main road. True to its name, the cafe embraces a wabi-sabi aesthetic with a minimalistic, rustic interior featuring neutral grey tones. The space feels cosy and relaxing, making it an inviting spot to settle in with a good book or laptop, which is exactly what I did!

BTW, Power sockets are available, which is always a plus for getting some work done. But since seating is quite limited, it’s best to drop by during non-peak hours.

The menu at Cafe Wabi Sabi pays homage to Japanese cuisine. I went for the Mentai Karaage Don (S$15.90), which was absolutely loaded. A towering heap of chunky, crispy chicken sat on a bed of rice, accompanied by cucumber, corn, and cherry tomatoes, all generously drizzled with mentai sauce. The set also came with miso soup, which rounded out the meal nicely.

For dessert, I opted for the Matcha Burnt Cheese Cake (S$7.90). The texture was creamy and dense, and while I would have preferred a more pronounced burnt top for a deeper caramelised flavour, the matcha itself had a bittersweet profile that complemented the richness of the cheesecake. Nothing particularly mind-blowing, but it's still a delicious and filling treat.

To wash everything down, I got the Strawberry Matcha Latte (S$8.50). The drink had a nice balance of sweet strawberries and earthy matcha, though I found the matcha a bit more umami-forward than bitter. They use the Malaysian brand Niko Neko Matcha, which is known for its smooth, refined taste. If you’re not a fan of overly bitter matcha, this one might be right up your alley. Personally, I would have loved a touch more of that robust bitterness, but it was still refreshing.

Overall, I appreciate the affordable pricing, large portions, and solid flavours at Cafe Wabi Sabi. It’s a great spot to grab a comforting Japanese-inspired meal, and I can see myself returning when I’m in the area!
