red sparrow dempsey review

Hey, Faithfuls! If you follow this blog, you will notice that I don't post often about Asian food. While I personally prefer Western food, I actually also love Asian cuisine such as Vietnamese food. I got the chance to visit an authentic Vietnamese restaurant at Dempsey called Red Sparrow recently, so today, I will be blogging about my experience there.

We made a reservation on the day for four people, and since it was a Sunday night, I was quite surprised that we were able to get seats. When we arrived there, we saw a steady flow of people coming in and out of the restaurant. Thankfully, we didn't need to wait for long and were seated almost immediately.

Red Sparrow actually looks very charming and makes you feel like you're in Vietnam. There were these lanterns hanging on the ceiling, almost somewhat stereotypical of Vietnam, but exactly the kind of thing you'd expect to see at a Vietnamese restaurant. A majority of the staff who served us were Vietnamese as well.

The menu was quite confusing as the items were presented in their Vietnamese names. We asked the staff if he could give us some recommendations since it was our first time there, and he kindly obliged. We decided to get three bowls of pho - the Pho Bo Tai (S$18)Pho Dac Biet (S$22), and Pho Ga (S$18).

The Pho Bo Tai had thinly sliced US chuck roll as well as braised beef brisk. I thought the broth was delicious although my boyfriend thought it could be sweeter and saltier. I do prefer my broth to be a little on the lighter side, so I thought it was good. There was a decent amount of meat, although I thought the portion of the noodles were quite small, considering the price.

The Pho Dac Biet was the most expensive pho of the bunch with a mix of beef balls, thinly-sliced beef, brisket, tripe, and tendon. Similar to the Pho Bo Tai, the portion of the noodles were quite small and the broth was also on the lighter side. But overall, it was a decent dish!

The Pho Ga consisted of boneless chicken leg and chicken meatballs. We all agreed that the chicken pho was not as delicious as the beef ones, but that could be down to personal preference.

Being a lover of Vietnamese rolls, we also got the Phan An (S$25) which came with a choice of any three varieties of rolls (which comes with two pieces of rolls each) and dedicated sauces. We chose Goi Cuon (braised pork), Dau Hu Cuon (fried tofu), and Bi Cuon (pork belly). All rolls were great, but the fried tofu one included some kind of fermented (?) tofu that we were not a fan of. The regular fried tofu was great though!

We also got the Banh Xeo (S$19), a savoury Vietnamese pancake loaded with mushrooms, tiger prawns, braised pork, spring onions, beansprouts, herbs, and lettuce. It is something like a crispy crepe. When we first had our first bite, my boyfriend looked at each other in confusion. But the more we ate, the more this pancake grew on us! The crispiness of the crepe and the sweet crunch of the vegetables worked so well together.

We also ordered the Rao Xao (S$16) - wok-fried seasonal greens with mushrooms, cabbage, garlic, and soy sauce. My boyfriend's parents really didn't like it, but I thought it was great. The vegetables were a little oily but savoury, and the mushrooms were sauteed to perfection.

To end the night on a sweet note, we ordered a dessert called the Che Chuoi (S$14) which had battered bananas, black glutinous rice, and coconut sago cream topped with vanilla ice cream. Absolutely loved the fried bananas and the black glutinous rice which was sweet and nutty.

In all honesty, the food here was not bad. Most of the portions were decent aside from the pho, and the food was authentic. I also liked how we got to try many unique dishes instead of the regular pho or banh mi. If you find yourself in the Dempsey area and all the restaurants are fully booked, you may want to try queuing for Red Sparrow instead!

That's all for today's post, see you next post.

  1. This place is definitely not authentic, it's elevated restaurant style viet, even if the flavours are great.
