Jin Yu Man Tang Review: Chinese Dessert @ East Coast
Hey, Faithfuls! It's been soooooo hot recently and my friend and I just had lunch at Katong's Nico Cafe. Venturing out to find a refreshing dessert to beat the "feels like 41°" heat, my friend recommended Jin Yu Man Tang, conveniently located at East Coast's The Flow and just a stone’s throw away from i12 Katong.
Intrigued by his rave reviews and enticed by the prospect of cooling down with some delightful treats, we set out to uncover this hidden gem.
Jin Yu Man Tang specialises in Chinese desserts like mango pomelo sago, red bean desserts, and peach gum. Stepping into the establishment, we were greeted by a charming blend of hipster decor and a serene atmosphere. However, with limited seating available and the occasional closure of the second level, it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
The aesthetic here is kind of eclectic yet inviting. Wooden tables are laid out next to leather chairs, and there's even an array of potted plants that bring the outside in. Also, I really love the 2000s Mandopop tunes that is played in the cafe. It brings me back to my emo XMM days.
I was feeling something milky and refreshing, so I went for the Peach Gum + Milk (S$5.30). Peach gum, a rarity in Singapore, piqued my curiosity with its reputation as a natural collagen-rich supplement. Paired with creamy milk, it delivered a delicate sweetness and was chewy too!
Meanwhile, my friend opted for the Mango Sago Pomelo (S$6.70), a timeless Cantonese dessert that evokes nostalgia with every spoonful. It features a harmonious blend of diced mangos, slivers of tangy pomelo, mango puree, milk, and velvety sago pearls.
There are many dessert spots in Katong, but if you're looking for a place that doesn't require a long walk from i12 Katong, you can give Jin Yu Man Tang a try!
