komunal-review

Hey Faithfuls! My latest find is this cosy cafe that’s not just good for your wallet, but also good for the heart. Komunal is tucked away on the ground floor of the WIS@Changi building, and while it may look unassuming at first glance, it’s one of those places that quietly left an impression on me.

What makes Komunal extra special is its purpose, as they employ and support staff with special needs through MIJ Hub, helping them develop skills such as barista work while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. It’s always nice knowing your coffee is contributing to something meaningful!

The space itself is compact, and it can get pretty cramped, especially on weekdays when the lunch crowd rolls in. We were lucky enough to snag a seat at a cosy little nook by the window where the sunlight cast this warm, glowy, sunrise-orange tint across the cafe.

Price-wise, Komunal is very affordable. One of our mains was the Sausage and Baby Potatoes (S$14), featuring chicken sausage with golden-roasted baby potatoes. It came with a house-made herb yoghurt dip, a fresh side salad with chilli-mango dressing, and crushed walnuts for added texture.

For desserts, we went with the Tiramisu (S$8.50). It was made up of layers of velvety mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers brewed from their house blend, finished with a dusting of cocoa. Comforting and classic. We also ordered their brownie, which made for a nice sharing dessert if you’re indecisive like me.

komunal-drinks

On the drinks front, they offer a matcha latte called Sora (S$7), made with a ceremonial-grade blend. The texture was smooth and well-rounded, with none of that harsh bitterness. They also serve chocolate drinks sourced from my home country, Malaysia, which I absolutely loved seeing on the menu. The Kota Marudu 70% (S$8) from Sabah had lovely floral notes, while the Triang 72% (S$6.50) from Pahang leans more towards toasted chestnut and malt flavours. Both were comforting and thoughtfully curated.

If coffee is more your thing, Komunal has you covered with filter coffee and espresso-based options, using beans from origins like Colombia and Ethiopia, among others.

All in all, Komunal is one of those cafes that gets a lot right with affordable prices, good food and drinks, and a meaningful mission behind it all. If you’re in the area, do drop by and support a space that’s doing good while serving up solid cafe fare!

Thanks for reading, and see you next post.
