Sephora Samples Review: Tarte, Tata Harper, First Aid Beauty, & More!

by - April 26, 2020

Hi guys!

So I'm really glad because I ordered a Fenty Beauty Mini Lip & Face Set from Sephora and it CAME TODAY! I'll be reviewing my 3 Fenty Lip & Face Sets another time, because today I'll be reviewing Sephora free samples!

I got to choose up to 6 Sephora free samples when I checked out, so I got a bunch of skincare and primers. The brands I chose from were Tarte, Tata Harper, Percy & Reed, Starskin, and First Aid Beauty. Some brands are more familiar than others, but some of the less-recognised brands were really good too!
So here's a review on all the free Sephora samples I got, with some pictures of me using it, the after-effects, and the texture of the products.

1. Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser (from $57)

This was the first Sephora product sample I tried, and I LOVED IT.
So the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser is a daily exfoliator, and it kinda feels like a scrub. I know some people have doubts about exfoliating everyday, but this once should be fine as the exfoliating is really, really gentle. Apparently you can also use it twice a day - during the morning and night. The cleanser is also free from synthetics, toxins, fillers, and artificials - for those of you who want to know.
What I loved about this cleanser was that it had a subtle vitamin C smell, and the "scrubby" particles felt very smooth. My skin didn't become red after, and even smelt nice! Most importantly, I felt really light after the cleanse.

2. First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturiser ($48)

On Sephora, this priming moisturiser is described as a "superfood-powered, oil-free moisturiser that brightens and visibly blurs pores and imperfections for a smoother finish". Now, let's dive in to whether the product lives up to that claim!
The cream was definitely smooth, but it was very thick. I felt like I was applying CC cream on my face. Wasn't a fan of the thick texture, but my face looked so smooth and shiny after that! The uneven tones of my skin seemed to be evened out as well. My pores were also very visibly smaller - like when you use the "smoothing" function on Meitu to edit your pores. I can only imagine how much better it'd look with makeup on.
One obviously good thing about this is that it's a 2-in-1 moisturiser and primer so it saves time from putting 2 different products. Some primer can also be quite drying for the skin, so having one that moisturisers can be good. I really loved the effect it had on my skin, and I would probably just wear this out without anything else but lipstick.

3. Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Wash & Care

This was the only hair sample I got, since it was the only hair sample available out of all the choices I had. My hair is also very, very badly damaged so I thought that this would help!
The Wonder Wash Shampoo was great. LOVED it. It was very creamy and smooth, and handled untamed hair well. As you know samples don't have large amounts, but the relatively small amount of shampoo was able to cover my whole head. The fragrance was also very sweet.

After shampooing, my hair felt lighter, and I could feel the residue coming off. My hair is generally very oily, and I felt that the shampoo managed to remove that buildup.

On the other hand, I didn't really like the Wonder Care Conditioner. It had a funky smell (like I was putting lotion on my hair), and my hair was less smooth after the conditioner than before. Then again, it's quite unfair to only review this after 1 try, so I may give it another go next time.

As a package, I think both the shampoo and conditioner worked well on my hair. Here's a before and after comparison (you can see my hair looks slightly smoother in the second picture, especially the top part).

4. Starskin Orglamic Pink Cactus Pudding Moisturiser (from $27)

Okay so this product was a little weird, and I'll explain in a bit.
This moisturiser is made of pudding concentrate of the highly nutritive Prickly Pear Cactus Seed Oil, Cactus Extracts, and Hyaluronic Acid. It's supposed to leave a long-lasting glow on your face and replenish moisture. You can use it in the day before applying your makeup, or as a night cream.
Bad news first, good later - so here's what I didn't like. The texture, though supposed to feel "jelly" was overly thick and sticky, and also this very tight feeling that I got after applying it on my face. It was generally difficult to apply as well, as the product clumped up together.

On the other hand, the effect it had on my skin was AMAZING. I only found out the next day when I woke up to glowy, soft, radiant skin. I was shook. Also the night before, my skin actually reacted a bit to the product and got a bit hot and red, but I guess it all worked out after all!
Love the effect, hate the process, but this is definitely worth a try.

5. First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser (from $18)

I love a good cleanser, and THIS was a good cleanser.
Good because it's not really great, but it's just good.

The First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser was quite a nice product, but it felt like any regular face wash. However, it's notable that it smells really good and doesn't leave your face feeling tight after like most drugstore cleansers do - which I really appreciate. The product was easy to apply on the face, and as was very light. I don't really have a lot of comments for this cleanser, as it generally works, though it's not the best - but it works!
The price point for the cleanser is alright too, so it's worth a buy.

6. Tarte Base Tape Hydrating Primer Packette (from $24)
Tarte products are known best for their quality, so I had high hopes for this one. However, it didn't really meet my expectations as the primer was pretty watery, and made my face feel really tight within 1 minute of applying it. Since it's a hydrating primer, I thought there would be more hydration??? in this product but it just felt like a normal primer.
A good thing about this primer is that it absorbs into the skin really fast, and it's not too sticky as well. I did love the coconut fragrance too! The reviews for this primer on Sephora are mixed, but for me I'd say PASS.

I had a lot of fun trying and reviewing all these beauty products, and my skin was really well pampered as well. I look forward to making another post like this the next time with Sephora foundation samples, makeup samples, or even perfume samples! Also, do remember to stay tuned for my Fenty Beauty Lip & Face Set review :)
