Black Knight Hotpot @ MBS Review

black knight hot pot review

So I chanced upon this hot pot restaurant at MBS called Black Knight Hotpot - for those of you who don't know, it's located just opposite Din Tai Fung. There doesn't seem to be a queue most of the time but the tables in the restaurant are often full, so out of curiosity I decided to try it out.

Black Knight Hotpot is apparently Taiwanese. Say real - I've only ever eaten mainstream hot pot before like Beauty In The Pot and Hai Di Lao, and I'm not the most adventurous when it comes to hot pot because there are horrible ones out there. But everywhere else was full on a Sunday night so my family decided to give Black Knight Hotpot a try!

The ambience was actually pretty nice and the place looks high end. The music was weird though - like the owner of that Spotify playlist was a hardcore BlackPink fan so their songs kept playing, which I thought was weird in a Taiwanese hot pot restaurant. JJ Lin and Eric Chou, where you at?

Anyway, the staff were actually quite friendly and assisted us a lot in the ordering process since it was our first time here. There's the Hot Pot Ala Carte Menu and Hot Pot Set Menu, and we chose the set menu  which had a promotion at $198++ for 4-5 pax (U.P. $268++).

Here's what you can choose from for the Hot Pot Set Menu:
1. Soup Base
2. Meat
3. Hotpot Ingredients
4. Vegetables
5. Rice Noodles

We ended up ordering these goodies:

(Btw, I try my best to include all the prices that can be found in the ala carte menu, but some prices are just not listed!)

1. Soup Base

  • Pork Tripe & Chicken Peppercorn Pot ($38 for one broth, $48 for two)

2. Meat

  • Australian Lamb Fillet ($28)
  • Japanese Pork Collar ($22) x2

3. Seafood
(We skipped seafood because we don't eat seafood, and we ordered these instead)

  • Homemade Shrimp Paste $18
  • Fried Spare Ribs $18

4. Hotpot Ingredients

  • Fried Bean Curd Roll
  • Swallow Dumpling
  • Homemade Pork Dumplings $8
  • Lobster Meat Balls $12

5. Vegetables

  • Baby Cabbage $8
  • Nai Bai $8

6. Rice Noodles

  • Egg Ramen $6

7. Beverages

  • Chrysanthemum Tea (Pot) $12

They do sell alcohol too - for those of you who are interested. Wines start at S$15/glass and beer at S$12.

So y'all are probably reading this because you wan't to know what's good and what's not, so let's cut to the chase!

Thankfully, everything was pretty good, starting with the hot pot soup base. Black Knight Hot Pot's signature is their Nourishing Beauty Pot, but we couldn't order it because it was sold out that day. We opted for the Pork Tripe & Chicken Peppercorn Pot instead which came in this beautiful antique-looking pot.

Now this soup base has an interesting taste. When the staff first served us this, they recommended us to try a little sip first before adding food to it, so we did - and thank goodness we did! That one sip is good preparation because the broth has an intense, strong kick that can overwhelm you if you drink too fast. There's also a very strong peppery taste. Fortunately the taste gets less intense once food is added to the soup!

Onto the meats!

The Australian Lamb Fillet and Japanese Pork Collar came in thick juicy slices and they were super chewy - like, you really need to chew. Their meats are on the fattier side as well and you can see the all the marbling!
black knight hot pot sauce
The sauces go great with the meats too. Honestly I have no idea what the sauces are because the staff just told us to mix in this and that, but it was good - a bit on the stronger side though, with lots of sour and spice.
black knight hot pot shrimp paste
We skipped 'Seafood' because we don't really fancy that. Not sure how my fam ordered because they managed to substitute this with the Homemade Shrimp Paste and Fried Spare Ribs which, mind you was super delicious. The shrimp paste had quite a strong shrimp taste but lacked the 'fishy' smell. I can't remember how the Fried Spare Ribs tasted like, so it probably was just ok-ok and not fantastic.

Personally, I loved the 'Hotpot Ingredients' and felt that it was the highlight of the meal. The dumplings were my favourite, especially the Swallow Dumplings and Homemade Pork Dumplings - full of meat, juicy and flooding with soup. The Lobster Meat Balls were sweet with a little bit of spiciness. When you bite in, there's this mentaiko-like taste which I loved so much. Hands down my favourite dish!

The Egg Ramen was reserved for last. It really soaked up the soup well and even by itself was flavourful and chewy. Extremely filling too since the noodles are thick, so don't over order this!

The verdict? Black Knight Hotpot is surprisingly good! It's quite pricey but rest assured that the quality is great and there are zero bad dishes (at least for the ones I had). Some dishes were mediocre, but most were outstanding like the Lobster Meat Balls, dumplings, shrimp paste and even the soup base itself. I'd say that eating here was a really unique experience because most of the ingredients aren't commonly found in other hot pot restaurants.

  1. I have tried so many hotpot joints, this is the worst. Order taking trying to upsell and said food ordered may not be enough. This is the 1st place I had 1 bowl of soup (others at least 5 bowls), got a pain on the back of my neck and my wife felt headache. Don't serve water, only bottle despite us ordered beers and juices. My first visit and definitely my last. Expensive items they trying to promote. The most expensive hotpot bill in my life.

    1. Wah sorry for your bad experience! When I was there the service was still ok. No hardselling but they didn't pay much attention to us, compared with the other tables who spent more. I agree that it's rather expensive compared to other hotpot places too. HDL is opening next door to them soon so I wonder how that will affect their biz!
