Yardbird @ MBS Food Review: Course Dinner
Yardbird Review At Marina Bay Sands
Yardbird Singapore - or Yardbird Southern Table & Bar - is a restaurant located at MBS. As it's often crowded during the weekends, it's best to make a booking days - if not weeks - in advance. You can choose to walk in, but the earliest available time is usually around 9pm. Yardbird reservations can be made here.
I really liked the ambience in Yardbird. The lighting is dim and the environment is casual yet attas - to a certain extent. It's a great place to grab a couple of drinks with friends too, judging by the amount of liquor they have in the restaurant.
We decided to order one Chef's Set 3 course dinner (S$68) and one Chef's Tasting Set 4 course dinner (S$78). Each set allows you to choose one salad under 'Garden Bites', one main, one dessert under 'Southern Sweets' and a choice of coffee or tea, while the 4 course dinner allows an additional choice of classic biscuits or deviled eggs. For mains, you can choose any dish of your choice listed under 'Mains' in the menu, but an additional top-up of S$10 is required for premium items.
For salad, my boyfriend and I both ordered The Wedge (S$18) which consisted of house-smoked pork belly, butter lettuce, charred corn, tomatoes, avocado and house-made buttermilk ranch dressing. This salad was so good, but I bet it was super unhealthy as well (which I don't mind). Not only was it drenched in dressing, it was also really creamy thanks to the avocado. I also really appreciated how the portion was rather hearty.
The deviled eggs were served together with the salad, and boy was it GOOD. I know deviled eggs are basically just fancily prepared hard-boiled eggs, but Yardbird took it up a notch by adding dill, chives and briny smoked trout roe for extra flavour. The dish was more on the tangy, sweet-sour side and the texture of the egg yolk paste was as smooth as mash potatoes.
By the time we moved on to the mains, my boyfriend and I were already 40% full. I had the Smoked Pork Ribs (S$46) with hickory smoked, house-made BBQ sauce and he had the Lobster Mac & Cheese (S$64) which served a whole lobster with a mix of five artisanal cheeses.
I absolutely loved my dish. Just by smelling it from afar, anyone could tell that it was smoked to perfection. The meat was soft, juicy and literally slid off the bone once cut. Once you put the meat in your mouth, you can taste the smokiness as well as the sweet flavour from the BBQ sauce.
The Lobster Mac & Cheese was an expensive dish, but I felt like it lacked in a few ways. While it was delicious, the lobster meat was a bit salty and the mac and cheese felt quite undercooked. However, I did like how the mac and cheese was extremely cheesy and not jelak at all. Rest assured we still licked the plate clean.
For dessert I ordered the Salted Caramel Bread Pudding (S$16) with whisky-infused custard bread pudding, dragee pecans, chantilly cream and gooey salted caramel. This dessert didn't even bother to be subtle about the alcohol; the whiskey taste was extremely strong yet it paired well with the overall sweetness of the dish.
My boyfriend had the Fried Oreos (S$14) and it was one of the most delicious dessert I've ever tasted. This dessert sounded like something you'd find at a night market at Taiwan, but the presentation was gorgeous and absolutely mouth watering. While it came with vanilla ice cream, we felt like the fried oreos already tasted amazing just with the infused marshmallows.
After dessert, we were served some refreshing chamomile tea from TWG. It really, truly cleansed the palate and was a great way to end the meal. Made me really calm and sleepy after that too!
