Hey, Faithfuls! If you’ve ever walked past Sim Lim Square during lunchtime, you might have noticed a stall with a never-ending queue. That’s 3 Meals a Day, famous for their salted egg chicken rice. I first heard about them when a friend insisted we try it while we were in Bugis. The long queue was intimidating, but after that first bite, I knew I’d be coming back for more and more and more because it's so so good.

When they opened a new outlet in Bendemeer—just one bus stop away from my office, and near Bendemeer MRT Station—I found myself eating there a lot more often.

No surprises, I always go for their Salted Egg Chicken with Rice (S$7.50), with a must-have add-on: a fried Egg (S$0.80). Something about that runny yolk mixing into the sauce just makes the whole dish even better. Its velvety yolk added an extra layer of richness that made the dish even more addictive.

The salted egg chicken hits the perfect balance between creamy and slightly spicy, with just enough heat to make each bite exciting. There were slices of red chilli in the sauce, but surprisingly, the real heat came from the chicken itself. I’m usually quite sensitive to spice, but the flavour was so addictive that I just kept eating and sweating while at it. The crispy, well-seasoned batter soaked up the rich salted egg sauce beautifully.

On one visit, my friend wasn’t in the mood for rice, so he got the Flat Noodle Handmade Noodle Soup (S$5.50) instead. It’s not the most popular order here, but it’s actually quite decent. While I personally still prefer Prince Noodles’ ban mian, 3 Meals a Day’s version was a solid contender. The noodles had a nice chew to them, and the broth was light yet comforting. The portion was massive, packed with minced pork, an egg, meatballs, and a generous heap of crispy ikan bilis.

We also got a side of Fried Baby Kailan with Garlic (S$10). At first, the price seemed steep for a vegetable dish, but they definitely didn’t skimp on the portion. The kailan was fresh, slightly sweet, and coated in fragrant garlic and oyster sauce—no bitterness at all, which was a huge plus.

For drinks, I tried their Three Layer Tea Ice (S$2.90). I usually drink as I eat, but on this visit, I saved it for the end because I didn’t want to take away from the rich salted egg flavours. They also have other options like Kopi (from S$1.70), Sour Plum (S$2), and Lemongrass Iced Tea (S$2).

The Bendemeer outlet has a nice, no-frills vibe and is noticeably less crowded than their Bugis branch. Plus, they’re open till 9pm, which makes it a great post-gym meal spot for me. Portions are generous, the food is consistently good, and I hope they stick around for a long time!

Thanks for reading, and see you next post!
