Hey friends! I recently visited a cafe at Hillview called Coexist Coffee Co., and it's a rooftop cafe with a Jekyll & Hyde concept. I say this because the cafe is split down right in the middle and separated into two colors, white and red. Coexist Coffee Co. is super far away from where my boyfriend and I stay, but we were so curious about the place that we traveled over an hour just to go there!

We were expecting a lot of people at the cafe, and we were right! But unlike the horror stories we read online about how people had to queue for hours, there was only one group in front of us and we managed to be seated within 30 minutes. There was a steady stream of customers coming into the cafe until around 3pm when the crowd started to die down. I think the small size of the cafe also causes the limited seats, which is why waiting is required. With this said, I'm not sure why the cafe still allows their customers to do their work here (which was what we saw many people doing), considering that they're hogging seats and now allowing other paying customers to enter. From a financial standpoint, I couldn't understand this.

When we looked at the menu, we were quite surprised by the prices. Most of the main items were over S$20, which for broke uni kids like us is considered quite expensive. We ordered the Chili Crab Shakshuka (S$16) to share, Rendang Wagyu Beef Burger (S$22), and Sambal Fish and Chips (S$20).

The Chili Crab Shakshuka was served first and it looked super delicious. According to my boyfriend, he read reviews online that said this was a recommended item too. The Mantous were crispy and savory, and the sauce was mildly spicy and sour, with hints of sweetness. The sauce alone is on the watery side, but once you mix the egg into it, it becomes creamy. The only downside was that the Mantous ran out way before the sauce did! I rate this dish an 8/10.

The Sambal Fish and Chips was huge! We were so surprised at how big it was. According to my boyfriend, the fish was one of the best he's tasted, and it did not have a fishy smell. The skin was crunchy and not too oily, while the insides were hot and soft. Overall, it was also quite spicy due to the sambal! Fries were served as sides, but he didn't really touch it because the fish was enough to keep him occupied.

I got the Rendang Wagyu Beef Burger, which was another humongous dish. I started off with the wedges and boy, they were good! I love how they came in smaller, chewable pieces and were on the softer side. What I loved about the burger - the burger bun by itself smelled delicious, with a very slight burn but still soft overall. What I didn't like - the Wagyu was quite inconsistent as it was tough in certain areas, but soft in other parts. The cheese looked like it was overflowing, but did not contribute much to the taste, as I could mainly taste the Rendang. I let my boyfriend have a taste as well, and he was disappointed. I thought this was a 7/10, but he rated it a 6/10!

For drinks, we got the Mocha and White (coffee) with ice, both at S$6 and S$5.50 each. I loved the Mocha! It was pretty high in acidity which I usually don't like, but the chocolate taste more than made up for it. My boyfriend's White coffee was also rather sour but still made for a creamy, refreshing drink. Only one complaint - the coffee sizes are quite small!

My boyfriend and I agreed that overall, the food was pretty decent and although expensive, was still worth considering the portion. It's also a very nice environment to dine in, since it's pretty chill and relaxed with an interesting concept. If you come here, do try the coffee because it's really good! Also note that Coexist Coffee Co. does not take reservations, so you'll just have to come down early on a weekday and join the waiting list!

Thanks for reading, and see you next post.
