Hey, Faithfuls! Recently, my mom came to visit Singapore, and since she was missing Chinese food after her trip to Japan, I knew exactly where to take her—Yun Nans! This restaurant is famous for Yunnan cuisine, with outlets conveniently located at Jewel Changi Airport, ION Orchard, and NEX. We decided on the NEX outlet since it's close by.

The ambience at Yun Nans is perfect for large gatherings, but it worked out great for our little trio—just me, my mom, and my sister. We were seated at a cosy table, and I immediately felt how family-friendly the place was. The staff were super attentive and helpful, answering all our questions about portion sizes and recommending dishes.

mapo-tofu

We, of course, had to try their signature dishes, and first up was the Mapo Tofu (S$13.80). This dish had just the right amount of spice—both the heat that tingles on your tongue and the classic mala sensation from Sichuan peppercorns. The tofu was silky smooth, swimming in a rich, oily sauce that was packed with umami thanks to the fermented bean paste. Every bite had a satisfying, spicy depth that made it hard to stop eating.

Next, we dug into the Sweet And Sour Pork With Pineapple (S$18.50). I absolutely loved the contrast of flavours. The pork was perfectly battered and pan-fried to crispy, golden perfection, yet still tender and juicy inside. It was then tossed in a fragrant, tangy, and umami-packed sauce, balanced by the sweetness of fresh pineapple chunks. This dish was a hit with all of us—classic and comforting!

For something on the lighter side, we had the Nai Bai With Ham And Yun Nans Bean Curd Skin Soup (S$18.80). Since they were out of the bok choy, they substituted another vegetable, but honestly, the dish was still fantastic. The rich, garlicky fragrance was the star of the show here, while the soup itself was savoury and creamy. The beancurd skin added a nice texture, and the dish had a comforting warmth that paired perfectly with the meal.

To wash it all down, I went for the Yun Nans Rose Tea with Goji Berries (S$4.05). This drink was light and refreshing, with a subtle floral note from the rose, balanced by the slight sweetness of the goji berries. It was a great palate cleanser after the savoury, rich dishes. Plus, it felt like I was sipping on something healthy and revitalising!

Overall, Yun Nans never disappoints! It’s a great spot for authentic Yunnan cuisine, and my mom thoroughly enjoyed every dish. Whether you're dining with family or friends, Yun Nans offers flavorful food in a welcoming, cosy environment. Definitely worth coming back!

Thanks for reading, and see you next post!
