gula-SG-review

Hey, Faithfuls! I recently had my eyes on this super cute cafe called Gula SG, located at Urban Vista in Tanah Merah. Since I live nearby in Simei, I had to check it out, of course!

I went down on a weekend fully expecting it to be packed, but surprisingly, there were still seats available despite the cosy space. Most people seemed to be popping by in slippers and shorts to grab takeaway or collect pre-orders, very much giving neighbourhood regulars just coming downstairs for their daily fix.

The moment I stepped in, I was INSTANTLY hit with a wave of nostalgia. The space honestly looks like a makcik’s house, or even my own grandmother’s home with old-school furniture, wooden accents, a retro TV, a sewing machine, and even those lace table mats that just scream grandmother.

The counter is where you place your orders, and you can see the bakes available for the day. During my visit, they had: Kaya Croissant (S$5.50), Butter Croissant (S$4.50), Almond Croissant (S$5.50), and Pain au Chocolat (S$5), among others.

I went for the Cheese Croissant (S$5.50), and it was HUGE. Definitely shareable (which I did with my boyfriend, unwillingly, of course). The croissant was flaky and crisp, with that satisfying crunch when you bite into it. The cheese filling reminded me of those classic savoury BreadTalk cheese buns.

Then we had the Lemon Loaf Slice (S$5), which was SO GOOD. Super moist (which is rare because lemon loaves can be dry), with just the right amount of lemon drizzle icing. Every bite had that sweet-tangy glaze, and it wasn’t overly sour or overly sweet. Honestly, one of the better lemon loaves I’ve had.

The owners were kind enough to let us try their traditional chocolate Swiss roll, which isn’t on the menu yet but will be launching soon. I LOVED IT EH. The cake was super soft and fluffy, while the chocolate cream was light, smooth, and not too dense. It didn’t have that heavy, overly rich chocolate taste and instead, it was airy yet still indulgent.

For drinks, we got the Iced Latte (S$6) and the Iced Mango Matcha (S$6.50). Prices are pretty affordable in my opinion.

The Mango Matcha was interesting as it was leaning more milky than refreshing. The mango flavour itself tasted ... creamy? I know that sounds weird, but it wasn’t tangy or sharp like you’d expect. It blended more into the milk, making the whole drink rich and smooth. Not the most refreshing choice, but I still enjoyed it.

Gula SG is really convenient to get to as it’s near Tanah Merah MRT Station, and you can even enter via the condo side gate at Exit B by punching in their unit number. As someone who lives in Simei, I genuinely have no excuse not to come back because it legitly is a hIdDeN GeM!!!!

If you’re looking for a chill spot that feels like home, this is so so worth checking out. Thanks for reading, and see you next post!
