Video Subtitling Intern At Nas Daily (Part One)

nas-daily-singapore-internship

Hey friends!

I've had quite a bit of inactivity this year because I was so busy with my internship. If you didn't know, I took on an internship at Nas Daily in early January, and I just concluded it this week. A lot of people are very surprised when they know I worked there because Nas Daily is a very renowned company and people watch his videos all the time on Facebook.

So in today's blog post, I want to share with you guys my internship experience at Nas Daily, the interview process and six things I enjoyed about it.

Let's get started!

The Nas Daily interview

I already knew about Nas Daily beforehand and this was actually my second time applying for an internship here. I didn't get a reply the first time but did the second time. I had to write an email with a cover letter and send in my resume. About three days later, I received a reply from HR asking if I was free for a Zoom interview and immediately said yes!

The interview was rather nerve-wracking. I would say I was taken aback by some of the questions, especially from one of the interviewers who I will not name. I guess they're just really straightforward and you cannot take things personally if not you'll be offended. I could tell that that particular person didn't really want to hire me... and I guess I eventually got the job because they needed someone urgently. On the other hand, HR was really nice it was obvious that she liked me, she even said she would love to offer me the position during the interview itself!

The questions they asked were like, "What do you know about this job?", "Are you okay with a routine job?", and "How well do you work under pressure?". They would also want to get to know you more and ask you what your strengths and weaknesses are and what you like doing during your free time.

After the interview, I honestly felt that I wasn't going to get the job because of that one person who I felt didn't like me wasn't confident about hiring me. So imagine my surprise when I got the offer!

Sometimes before getting offered, you may need to do an assignment to see if you're a fit for the company. I didn't need to do this, but if you're applying for a project manager or marketing role, you may need to do so.

The work at Nas Daily

My role was as a video subtitling intern. We work in-office at One North on Mondays and Fridays, and work from home the rest of the days. So on a day to day basis, this is what I do from 10am to 7pm:

10am: Standup
10.30am: Go through video errors from previous days
11.00am: Edit videos (Facebook, Douyin, IGTV)
4pm: Scheduling of videos onto Facebook, Douyin, IGTV (on Fridays)
6pm: Cross-checking

So basically our role as a video subtitling intern is to assign the videos out to be translated into different languages via this in-house app or Final Cut Pro X. Once the translations are done, we take them and edit them into the videos. At the end of each week, we will publish these videos on 14 different Facebook pages.

That's a very, very brief summary of the job. We do lots of other work such as reviewing videos and tons of problem-solving too. Problems pop up every day and every minute of the day and this stresses me out LOL. Sometimes the internet is slow, sometimes the server is down, sometimes there are technical issues. There are just issues every day.

The nature of the work is also cumulative, so if you don't finish your work today, you'll have to finish them tomorrow on top of the new incoming translations. It's incredibly stressful because the work never ends! We're constantly rushing against the clock.

Another very stressful part of this job is the amount of meticulousness and focus it requires. After editing each video, be it a one-minute or three-minute one, we had to watch each of these videos at normal speed to look out for any mistakes. If there is a mistake, you'll have to redo the video and download it and rewatch it. Being careful is important because we are the last line of defence before these videos go out to millions of Nas Daily followers, and that is a big burden to bear.

The good

I enjoyed a few things from this internship, and here are four of them.

Learning new skills

I learned a lot during this internship, like a lot. I learned how to use Final Cut Pro X, Creator Studio, create content and problem solve. I also got to put my other skills to good use, such as copywriting and design. I was even asked to write short articles and design a YouTube badge for the Nas Daily YouTube - things that were out of my job scope. Of course, it can be stressful having to complete these tasks on top of the usual responsibilities assigned to me, but it's nice doing something new for a change.

Being a Force for Good

I really relate to Nas Daily's vision and mission which is to be a Force for Good. I appreciate that, unlike most media companies who just value churning out trendy content for views, Nas Daily creates content to make a change. They've published tons of videos that have improved the lives of people such as this one about Africa's Elon Musk, and this video actually led to the young boy being offered many jobs.

I have a personal struggle being in the content and media industry because I feel like I'm creating superficial content that doesn't benefit society. It's really heartwarming that Nas Daily being such a famous company is using their influence to do good. That is really something I hope to do too, one day.

Great welfare and food

The company tries to pamper their stuff as much as possible, which I appreciate. We have a great pantry, a coffee machine with amazing coffee and staff lunch every Mondays and Fridays. They also celebrate every staff's birthday.

I love it when they have Sushi Fridays or Pizza Fridays. Personally, those are my favourites!

Diversity

A majority of staff at Nas Daily are non-Singaporeans, so it's really nice to see such diversity and get to know people from Dubai, France, India and even Iraq! Nas Daily also promotes lots of inter-department mingling sessions so we have lots of opportunities to bond.

One of my favourite bonding sessions was lunch with our CEO, Nuseir himself. Everyone in the company got to go out for a group lunch with him and have a nice chat. We went to this nice Turkish restaurant near the office and took a picture together. Ignore the middle finger (which actually isn't a middle finger) - that was an inside joke.

Nuseir is really nice actually! He's this ball of energy and speaks really, really loud and fast. He also makes an effort to get to know each and every one of his staff. As a boss, he can be quite demanding and a bit blur sometimes, like he has so many things on his mind and everyone needs to rush him and remind him of the things he needs to do. I really admire his values and that he genuinely wants to change the world for the better through Nas Daily content.

An interesting journey

My three months with Nas Daily had their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to work there, since not many people even get the chance.
