Hey friends! I was scrolling through my feed on TikTok and saw many people post about this 2D cafe near the Lavender/Bugis area called Cafe Monochrome. The cafe looks straight out of a comic book that's completely in black and white. Some of us may be familiar with this Instagrammable cafe since it's popular in Malaysia and Taiwan, and now it's finally in Singapore!

My sister and I decided to go try it out! We visited Cafe Monochrome during a PH and were expected a large crowd when we were there at exactly 12pm. There were already numerous customers being seated, mostly from those who made reservations prior, and we stood outside waiting for the staff to attend to us. Luckily, there was one table available for us, which was right at the entrance.

The cafe goes all the way in, but we didn't really get to take a look since we were seated at the entrance.

We were given the menu to look through the items and had to go to the counter to order. The menu is really simple and mainly consists of Western food such as pasta and fusion food like Smoked bacon donburi. All the prices are nett.

I ordered the Truffle cream pasta (S$16) which consisted of fusilli, truffle cream, swiss brown mushroom, and smoked bacon. The pasta was quite watery, but the taste of the truffle was distinct. I just wish it was creamier and had cheese! I liked how there were a lot of the swiss brown mushrooms as well. However, in comparison to other pasta I've tried such as those at Pastamania, this one lacked in texture and flavor.

On the bright side, the portion was decent and I was really full at the end!

My sister ordered the Smoked duck donburi (S$12) which had smoked bacon, don, Sous Vide Egg, Furikake, and asparagus. According to her, the duck tasted good but overall the dish lacked gravy. There was a lot of white rice served as well (like, really a lot!) so even when she finished the duck, there was a lot of rice left with not enough gravy.

For drinks, I ordered a Latte (S$6). Sadly, I thought that the latte was the best part of the meal! The food was okay only, but I really liked the latte! The consistency was smooth and the taste was just strong enough, and it was very refreshing on a hot day.

I think Cafe Monochrome is a pretty decent cafe serving food at relatively affordable prices, although the food is not fantastic. It's also a good place to take pictures and drink some coffee, but if you really want food of great quality, it's best to look elsewhere! Another weird thing that kept happening while we were at the cafe was that the electricity kept going out and the lights and aircon would turn off, so I hope the management fixes this!

Cafe Monochrome is a good place to visit once, but considering the quality of food and inconvenience to walk there, I may not come again often.
