Hey, Faithfuls! If you’re on the lookout for a cosy, under-the-radar dessert spot, you gotta thank me for not gatekeeping this hidden gem in Hougang. Tucked under an HDB block, DuoDuo Dou is a charming cafe that serves up traditional Chinese desserts like mango shaved ice and it’s no surprise I discovered it through social media. The best part? It’s open until 2am on selected days, making it perfect for late-night cravings.

Although it’s not the most accessible location—requiring a bus ride from Sengkang, Hougang, or Kovan MRT stations—it does keep the NPCs away. This hidden gem is mainly frequented by those living nearby, giving it that “if you know, you know” vibe.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the homey decor. The place is filled with cat illustrations and knick-knacks, giving it a playful and welcoming atmosphere. It’s clear the owners are cat lovers, which only adds to the cafe's charm!

When I spoke to the staff, they shared that their menu is inspired by traditional Malaysian and Chinese desserts, with their bingfen, AKA ice jelly desserts, being the most popular.

Naturally, I had to try their most Instagram-worthy dessert: the Taro Jelly Bingfen (S$5.90). This colourful bowl is all about the visuals and features green and purple taro balls, nata de coco, and grass jelly. It’s served with milk on the side, which you can pour over for that perfect IG-worthy shot. It tasted as good as it looked, with the taro balls being wonderfully chewy and the grass jelly adding a refreshing contrast.

Next up was the Mango Shaved Ice (S$8.90), which I was excited to try because it's my favourite fruit. The shaved ice was so cold that my teeth went numb, but the combination of juicy mango pieces and a hidden Biscoff base was heavenly. The Biscoff layer was slightly soggy from soaking up the milk but added a delightful, almost cake-like texture. I was told it was inspired by the Filipino dessert mango float, which explains the mango-and-biscuit combo. It was a surprisingly good match, and I’d definitely come back for this.

What sets DuoDuo Dou apart is its unique offering of lok lok (skewers), which you don’t usually find in dessert cafes. Starting from three for S$4.50, five for S$6.50, and ten for S$11, these skewers are available from 5pm. You can also choose between spicy or non-spicy sauce. They offer a variety of ingredients, including potato, tofu, quail eggs, lotus root, black fungus, cucumber, sausage, chicken, wide potato noodles, fish dumplings, mushrooms, and more.

To wash down the desserts, we tried their popular Dalgona Honeycomb Coffee (S$9.90). It was a bit pricey, but the taste made it worth every cent. Topped with chunks of house-made dalgona honeycomb, the coffee was rich and strong, with just the right amount of sweetness. It was so potent that I felt my heart race after a few sips, but honestly, I’d pay for this again.

For something lighter, we also tried the Spring Dream (S$5.50), a refreshing mix of ginger ale, lime, and cranberry. It was a perfect palate cleanser after all the sweet treats. They also offer a variety of other drinks, including Iced Matcha Latte (S$6.50) and Iced Jeju Canola Flower & Honey Tea (S$4.50), among many others.

DuoDuo Dou is a delightful spot that stands out for its charming decor, unique dessert offerings, and late-night hours. If you’re in the area or don’t mind the journey, it’s definitely worth a visit!
