Joji's Diner @ Upper Serangoon: Retro Diner Food Review
Hey y'all! We're finally able to dine in groups of five now, yay! I love themed restaurants, and there's this place that I've been wanting to go to for the longest time, and it's been popping up everywhere on social media. The place is called Joji's Diner and it's located in Upper Serangoon.
The reason why it's so popular - almost everything is below S$12.90 and the theme is inspired by an American diner from the 80s. From the black and white floor tiles to decorative gramophone disc records on the walls, the place really whisked me back to the days of Prince and Bon Jovi. And of course, I'm a sucker for cafes with 80s themes so I just had to come!
Like all popular cafes, Joji's Diner does not take reservations, so you just have to come early to beat the queue.
Joji's Diner opens at 11am but when we reached there at 11.01am, it was already 30% packed. By the time we were seated and settled around 11.10am, there was a short queue forming outside. I was quite impressed because the cafe's location is actually quite out of the way, yet so many people were willing to travel just to come here.
Food on the menu ranged from S$5.90-S$12.90. I ordered the Mac N' Cheese (S$5.90) and UFO Plate (S$6.90).
The Mac N' Cheese was a simple dish with triple cheese. Although it’s only S$5.90, the portion is reasonable and super filling. It’s not the creamiest and the cheese is gooier than it is sticky, but it was really easy to eat. It also had a very mild spice.
The UFO Plate looked rather disappointing when it first came with the two sorry-looking pancakes, burnt-looking patties, and two small Sunny-side Up eggs, but it tastes alright. The pancakes were not bad and didn't taste store-bought, but the patties were dry and definitely not juicy as stated in the menu. It was hard but tastes better once you add the eggs to it. The portion was decent though, and this whole plate is really enough to make you full!
My boyfriend got the Grilled Cheese (S$7.90) and Loaded Spuds (S$8.90) with a choice of Tatertots.
The Grilled Cheese was basically a triple cheese sandwich and was SUPER good and also came with Tatertots... which my boyfriend did not know, so we had a whole lot of Tatertots to gobble down. The sandwiches were so so so cheesy, and the kind that could be pulled apart. This dish was really a 10/10 with the garlic and cheese combination that packed a savory punch.
The Loaded Spuds with Tatertots was delicious too - just too bad that by this time we already had our stomachs full with the Tatertots that came as sides for the sandwich, so we were getting slightly sick of it. The Tatertots were also really crunchy and crispy - the kind where you could immediately taste the sore throat that would come right after eating it. Honestly, the whole dish is similar to the KFC Cheese Fries where the dressing gets poured over the food and that's it but hey, it still was delicious.
For drinks we had the Iced Latte (S$5.50), which was really smooth with a subtle taste. Super easy to drink and we finished it almost within seconds.
Final thoughts? Joji’s Diner is quite a gem considering the decent food and pricing. I was impressed with the food portions and definitely underestimated how large the servings were. If I knew it would be generously portioned, I would have just ordered one dish instead of two!
The ambiance here is also great, and it’s a good place to dress up and take retro-inspired pictures! I was too paiseh to do it because there were soooooo many people, but if you’re thick-skinned enough you can try it yourself!
That’s all for today’s post, thanks for reading and see you next post.
