NUS Hall Single Room Tour: What It's Like

Hey friends! In case you didn't know, I actually stayed in hall during the first two years of my uni life. I can't say I had a great time in terms of hall culture, but I did enjoy the benefits and convenience of staying on campus. My sister recently moved into hall as well, and even though it was a different hall, the room, layouts, and facilities are actually very similar to the ones I had. I also received many Instagram DMs regarding hall life, the fees, and the facilities so I thought it would be good to give a simple room tour so you know what it's like!

My sister stayed in a single room and you can check the updated hostel rates on the National University of Singapore (NUS) website. Do note that if you choose to stay in hall, you have to opt in for the meal plans as they are compulsory.

The single rooms are actually pretty spacious. I think certain amenities may differ across halls, but the common things should include a ceiling fan, table, chair, shelves, and a super-single bed. Bedsheets and pillows are usually provided as well, but I preferred to use my own ones. I also packed my own bed comforter because let's face it, hall mattresses are not the comfiest.

The blinds in my sister's room are actually so much better than the ones I had as they are completely opaque and offer more privacy. Do note that all hall rooms do not have an aircon, but feel free to smuggle one in if you dare - you will have to pay up to S$60/week if you get caught!

Other stuff that is provided in the room includes a floor-to-ceiling cupboard, hooks, a mirror, and a clothes rack. The cupboard is huge and was able to fit a lot of my clothes, and there were also lots of storage space to put other stuff like luggage bags.

The table has lots of storage options too, and they also provide drawers and extra shelving. My favourite part of the table has to be the corkboard because I can paste all sorts of shit there to make my room more personalised, and there are also in-built lights that you can turn on with the switch.

There were a few things that I had to bring along myself, such as cutlery, stationery, tissue boxes, toiletries, a table lamp, a laundry basket, and a hair dryer. I also brought a vacuum because my hair is always dropping all over the place so I had to clean up every few days.

If your hall has good welfare culture, you'll also be occasionally blessed with hall supplies such as toiletries, skincare, or snacks!

My sister's hall also provides a shoe rack and laundry rack which are placed outside the individual rooms. I'm not sure if her hall has a dryer, but mine did so we did not need a laundry rack to dry our clothes. If you plan to join lots of sports activities in hall, it's best to bring along extra laundry racks especially if you plan to wash your clothes often.

That's about it for the hall room tour! As you can see it's really a simple room with all the basic stuff you need. Hall provided me a pretty comfortable place to stay during the two years I was there, and I also added lots of things such as an aircon, table fan, computer monitor, air purifier, and a scent diffuser to make my room more comfortable. I know it sounds very extra, but it really makes a difference!
