Siyuan Desserts Review: Chinese Desserts @ Jalan Besar
I recently had a dinner date with my friends, and we decided to visit our favourite noodle place near our office, Prince Noodles. After a satisfying meal, we wanted to extend our time together, and one of my friends suggested checking out Siyuan Desserts, a traditional dessert cafe hidden inside a cheongsam shop in Jalan Besar.
The cafe has a charming, old-school vibe, with heavy wooden chairs that you'd typically find in Chinese restaurants. Inside, circular windows offer a glimpse into the neighbouring space where they make Mandarin gowns and cheongsam.
What sets this cafe apart is its unique menu, which lists the health benefits of each dessert. For instance, the Almond Cream is said to nourish lung health, while the Sesame Paste helps prevent heart disease, and the Walnut Cream is beneficial for cardiac health in general.
I ordered the 2 In 1 Sesame & Walnut (S$4.20). I loved the earthiness of the thick sesame paste with its hint of bitterness and the fragrant walnut paste with a touch of sweetness.
My friend opted for the Cheng Teng with Peach Gum (S$5), which is available in both warm and chilled options. It's amusing because the dessert arrived warm, and we initially thought they had given us the wrong order since we had asked for the chilled version. However, they simply added ice to the dessert to make it "chilled," so it wasn't completely cold.
This dessert features snow fungus, red dates, longan, and peach gum, making it very refreshing, especially in Singapore's hot weather.
I would definitely return because the prices are nett, and it's a lovely space to relax. The sesame paste here is one of the best I've had—it doesn't taste artificial at all. Although it's about an eight-minute walk from Lavender MRT Station, Siyuan Desserts is well worth the trip!
Thanks for reading and see you next post.
