sourdough-and-brew-review

Hey, Faithfuls! Yay, another cafe review! I’ve been wanting to visit Sourdough & Brew by Baking with Gina for ages—and I finally got to drop by two weekends ago! This cosy little cafe is all about coffee and sourdough bagels, which are basically essentials in my diet at this point. Gina, the founder, mentioned that younger folks might not appreciate sourdough bread as much, but I beg to differ. I shamelessly identify as part of the “young” crowd, and I LOVE sourdough bread and bagels!

Interestingly, Sourdough & Brew started as a hobby. Gina’s husband, Ethan, joined her in 2020 after they completed a hawker’s course together. The couple previously ran Ethan My Prawn Noodles at Amoy Street Food Centre before deciding to open this cosy bakery. Now, they bake together, sharing their love for sourdough with anyone who steps through their doors.

The cafe itself is small but inviting, with white and wooden accents creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Inside, it’s narrow but cosy, with tables suited for pairs and window seats perfect for people-watching.

If you prefer sitting outside, there are camping chairs that add a casual touch, reminiscent of Hideout Coffee Bar at Paya Lebar—but here, the view faces the main road. BTW, they open from 7:30am. That's crazy early. I love cafes that open early because that means I can grab a cuppa before heading to work.

Let’s talk food because Sourdough & Brew delivers. I was recommended the Eggsplosion Bagel (S$12). This bagel might sound over the top, but it’s perfectly balanced. The combo of egg, ham, and cheese is satisfying without being overly indulgent. I had this with a garlic cheese bagel, and it was sublime. I love it when garlic flavours pack a punch, and this hit the spot. The bagel itself was soft and fluffy too.

My friend had the Blueberry Sourdough Bagel (S$6) with Cream Cheese (S$1.80): I don’t usually gravitate towards sweet bagels, so this one took me by surprise. The blueberry flavour is subtle unless you bite into a blueberry bit, but what truly elevated it was the cream cheese. Light, refreshing, and creamy—it turned this bagel from a 7/10 to a solid 8/10.

As for drinks, Sourdough & Brew features matcha and genmaicha lattes from Niko Neko, which are some of the best you’ll find. I had the Niko Neko Ajisai Ceremonial Matcha Latte Iced (S$8.50). This was my first time trying matcha latte with soy milk, and it was a game-changer. The soy milk made the latte extra creamy without adding sweetness. It had a grassy, umami flavour with just the right hint of bitterness.

I also tried the Niko Neko Suisen Genmaicha Latte Iced (S$7.50). Genmaicha lattes aren’t easy to find, so I’m thrilled this is on the menu. This one had a toasty aroma with a flavour reminiscent of rice crackers. It’s smooth, light, and so easy to drink—I’ll definitely be ordering it again.

The vibes at Sourdough & Brew are like stepping into someone’s cosy home, where they bake just for you. Gina is such a sweetheart, and the warm, friendly energy here makes the café feel even more special. If you love sourdough or just appreciate a good café experience, I can’t recommend this spot enough!
