Bee Hoe Coffee: Back Alley Hidden Cafe With Vietnamese Coffee @ Joo Chiat
Hey, Faithfuls! Just when I thought Joo Chiat couldn't fit any more cafes, there's now a new cafe. NOT that I'm complaining, though. There’s something unique and viral-worthy about a cafe tucked away in an unsuspecting corner, and Bee Hoe Coffee in Joo Chiat delivers just that experience.
Concealed at the rear of the Autocutt Boardroom barber shop, this back alley cafe and coffee kiosk merges artisanal coffee craftsmanship with a dash of Vietnamese inspo.
Honestly, you’d never guess there’s a cafe nestled here unless you’re in the know, and I've been seeing this all over TikTok. There was a steady stream of caffeine addicts entering the cafe when I was there near their closing time, which is quite early, at 1pm.
Bee Hoe Coffee’s minimalist setup includes a sleek coffee counter and a snug indoor nook that seats two. You can choose to sit outside as well among the potted plants placed at the entrance to the cafe.
As a mostly takeaway cafe, Bee Hoe Coffee runs at its own pace. Orders may take a bit longer as they find their rhythm, so patience is key—especially as they’re still fresh on the scene.
The star of the show here is their coffee, which is made with beans sourced directly from the family farm of co-owner Jamie in Vietnam. Hence, the coffee here boats bold, robust flavours reminiscent of the vibrant street-corner cafes in Ho Chi Minh City.
The menu features a mix of classic and creative options, with standouts like Coconut Coffee (S$5.50) and Honey Egg Coffee (S$4.50). Unlike traditional Vietnamese egg coffee, which is often served warm, Bee Hoe Coffee presents theirs cold. A layer of sweet, airy egg foam sits atop strong espresso, creating a delightful contrast between the creamy froth and the dark, full-bodied brew.
For those who prefer something less adventurous, the Iced Latte (S$4.50) strikes a familiar balance. Slightly sweetened and with a malty undertone, it bridges the gap between Singapore’s beloved kopi and Vietnam’s ca phe sua da.
I was feeling peckish, so I ordered the Omelette Muffin (S$3.20) to go with my coffee. This humble yet pretty satisfying snack combines fluffy eggs with savoury ham, all sandwiched in a freshly made muffin. It’s light and flavourful and pairs wonderfully with a cup of coffee for a quick pick-me-up.
I wanna gatekeep this spot so bad, but we should always share good things and support small businesses! If you're into Vietnamese brews and inventive coffee creations, you'll appreciate that Bee Hoe Coffee brings a slice of Vietnam’s vibrant coffee culture to Singapore. Check it out if you're in the area and do remember to head down early!
Thanks for reading, and see you next post!
