Hey Faithfuls! If you know me, you’ll know I have a soft spot for Joo Chiat. There’s just something about the neighbourhood with its colours, the food, and heritage vibes that always pulls me back. So naturally, I decided to book myself a little staycation right in the heart of it, at STORIES Joo Chiat, a Hotel by Cove.

I booked my stay via Booking.com, and was intrigued because it’s newly renovated and sits in such a prime location. BTW, you can also book this hotel on Klook.

Location-wise, honestly, no complaints. The hotel is just a short walk from iconic landmarks like the colourful Peranakan shophouses on Koon Seng Road, surrounded by cafes, eateries, and all the charm Joo Chiat is known for. It’s about a 30-minute Grab ride from Changi Airport, or you can take public transport — the nearest MRT stations are Paya Lebar and Eunos, both around a 15-minute walk away.

BUT FIRST. Let’s talk about check-in. Because, unfortunately, this was where things went downhill fast.

I arrived at around 2:30pm and found no one at the front desk. No staff, no signage explaining what was going on—just confused guests slowly gathering and looking equally lost. I later found online that this is apparently a common issue: staff go MIA even though the hotel advertises a 24-hour front desk. I waited about 30 minutes, and still no one showed up.

Check-in is strictly at 3pm, and once the staff finally spawn, you’re required to queue. No early check-in, no communication. Honestly, it was pretty frustrating.

One thing I must flag: you need a physical IC to check in. They do not accept digital copies or SingPass verification. There’s a sign at the counter stating this, and apparently, it’s a new policy that many guests are unhappy about. It would’ve really helped if they'd sent an email reminder beforehand, instead of letting guests find out on the spot. Thankfully, I had my IC with me, but I did see online reviews about others getting turned away.

On the bright side, the lobby is quite pretty. It features heritage-inspired touches that reflect the colourful, Peranakan roots of the Joo Chiat neighbourhood, with paintings and decor that fit the area nicely. There’s also a TV playing ads, but honestly, you’re better off stepping out to explore the neighbourhood while waiting. One more thing, though—don’t leave your luggage unattended. It’s just placed in front of the counter, and anyone could technically walk in and take it. Singapore is safe but you can never be too sure.

Eventually, I made it up to my room. I paid S$127.37 for a Classic Queen (No Window) room. The room was dimly lit and cosy, which I personally didn’t mind, but I can see how some people might find it dark or even a little claustrophobic. If you need natural light, I’d strongly recommend booking a room with windows.

Lighting-wise, it was warm and moody with no harsh white lights (which I actually appreciated). The room definitely leaned into a heritage feel, with design touches that made me feel like I was living out my Little Nyonya fantasy. The bed was comfortable, the air-conditioning worked well, and the room came equipped with a work desk, TV, free toiletries, a refrigerator, an electric kettle, and a wardrobe.

The bathroom had good water pressure and a functioning heater, which is always a win. It was decked out in lovely Peranakan tiles, and amenities included a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand wash, body wash, shampoo, and a hairdryer. Best of all, there was a bidet. Huge plus!!!!

Cleanliness-wise, I’d give it about a 3 out of 5. It was clean enough, but you could tell housekeeping had been done to just an acceptable standard. There was still water left in the kettle from the previous guest, some dust in certain areas, and visible dirt marks on the table. Nothing horrifying, but not spotless either. Then again, this isn’t a five-star hotel.

I did sleep fairly well, although the doors are quite heavy, so you can hear people opening and slamming them shut along the corridor. I wore earplugs, which helped a lot.

So would I stay here again? Honestly, probably not. That said, if you’re just looking for a place to sleep with a great location so you can properly explore Joo Chiat, this might still work for you. Or maybe I’d consider trying one of their larger rooms or suites—or at least a room with windows—but not anytime soon.

Joo Chiat, however, remains as lovely as ever. And even if I won’t be returning to this hotel, I’ll always find my way back to the neighbourhood. Thanks for reading, and see you next post.
