Sloth & Messenger Coffee Review: Hidden Back Alley Cafe With Affordable Drinks @ Geylang

Hey, Faithfuls! I've been seeing this cute cafe in Geylang, which is tucked away in a quiet back alley off Lorong 35. I always go to this other coffee place nearby called Hideout Coffee Bar, but I decided to give this new-ish place, Sloth & Messenger Coffee, a try.

Sloth & Messanger Coffee is a spot you’d probably walk right past if you didn’t know it was there. It’s situated right beside local hawker favourites New Scissor-Cut Curry Rice and Sean Kee Duck Rice. Finding it might take a bit of effort, and quite a walk, but I guess good things are worth searching for.

It’s not directly on the main street, which makes it feel like a secret hideout for those in the know. But once you do spot it, you can’t miss it—the entrance is marked by a turquoise bicycle and signboard, standing out against the raw cement walls.

This cafe is actually a collaboration with Brawn & Brains Coffee, a name that should be familiar to coffee lovers in Singapore. Inside, the space is kept simple and unpretentious, with a tall Englishman behind the counter, ready to make you a cup of coffee as he makes some small talk.

Sloth & Messenger keeps things straightforward with a no-frills coffee menu. Prices start at S$4 for an espresso, and for those who prefer something other than coffee, there’s also Matcha Latte (S$6).

If you’re into filter coffee, you get a choice between two beans: Ethiopia Samii Bedessa and Indonesia Bali Kintamani. The former features dark fruit and bergamot notes, while the latter has a fruitier profile with tropical dried fruits FYI, the beans are sourced and roasted in-house!

I got an iced white, and it was pretty darn good. Smooth and nutty, with a soft bitter aftertaste is exactly the way I like my coffee. And it's so affordable?? My iced white only cost S$6.50 and it was HUGE. My coffee anxiety started setting in after 10 minutes of sipping on this.

The atmosphere here is casual and laid-back, almost like stepping into someone’s personal coffee studio. I like to sit outside if it's not too hot or not raining.

If you’re looking for a quiet spot on a weekday afternoon, this is the place to be. The cafe is small, but it doesn’t get too crowded during this time. The owner even came over to chat with me for a bit and, knowing I was heading to the gym, passed me an energy bar—such a thoughtful gesture! It was a really cosy, peaceful time alone, and I’d definitely come back again.

Thanks for reading, and see you next post!
